Mathais
is about four hours north of the Maine State line meaning
tourists are scarcer than a top notch lobster roll.
Joyce's lobster roll doesn't approach Reds but it is better than
many. My only objection is that it's served on a bed
of lettuce which is a lobster roll no-no. The
blueberry pie is ok too. Last year's blueberry crop
put away for this summer. Machias is smack in the
middle of Maine blueberry country and they take their pies
seriously. The waitress called this "two crust
blueberry pie" - I'm assuming because it has a top
and bottom crust. Nicest
thing about Joyce's is that there is none of that Down
East Maine orneriness about. As friendly a spot as
you'll find so far up north.
