My
headquarters for my soiree into Down East Maine was a
cabin rented on Great Wass Island, 4 miles down a dirt road east of
Jonesport. I mention this because the couple
that rented me the cabin said I had to try Tall
Barney's - best clams they'd ever had. Try
them I did, my first meal in the area. And the clams
are great and definitely among the best I've had.
They also are know for their breakfasts. A few days
later I tried that day's special - corned beef hash, a
couple of eggs, toast and coffee - all for $3.89. A
fine, hearty Maine breakfast at any price. There's
a long table in the center of the room, sort of reserved
for local lobster fisherman. And there's a constant
conversation going on among the regulars which is probably
the best way to find out what's happening and who it's
happening with in Jonesport.
