I
haven't been in a place like this since Blue Nun was
considered a premium wine. Right out of the 50's -
relishes served before the meal, black semi-circle
banquettes, soft olive green walls, one wall mirrored. The
kind of place the Moore parents took their kid to
celebrate a special occasion. Phil
Smidt's actually dates back to 1910. All along they
have been famous for two specialities - frog legs and lake
perch. Sauteed or fried, but according to my
waitress, most people order them sauteed. I went for
a combo, sauteed frogs legs and perch. Came with
fresh made tartar sauce that had a green hue to it.
Quite good. Alas
I found out too late, they're also famous for their
gooseberry pie. Worth a return trip.
