The
cuisine is Belgian and their burgers are probably
the best in Philadelphia. Go figure.
Monk's
burger starts off with two things going for
it. A great bun and a hand formed, loose
packed patty that their kitchen can broil a
precise medium rare. I usually go for the
Trapist burger topped with goat cheese, tomato and
onion.
Their
mussels, a Belgian speciality, are also among the
best in Philadelphia. The only disappointment,
and I seem to be the only one who thinks so, are
the frites or french fries. At any other
restaurant they would be outstanding. But this
is Belgium and there are no shoestring sized fries
in Belgium.
But
once I get started on one of their 200 beers, I stop
complaining about the fries. If they've got a
Belgian white, wheat beer on draught, give it a try.
