I'd been driving
about 40 miles on Rte 11W in eastern Tennessee hungry
and looking. Slim pickings. Then in Blaine,
just a few miles north of Knoxville and I-40, I happened
upon Breedings Restaurant. Looked interesting.
Good choice,
Breedings. They do most everything, but they brag
about their country ham. To late for breakfast, so
I did a country ham. Two sides, green beans and
"creamed potatoes." Creamed potatoes - I was thinking
potatoes in a cream sauce. Nope, mashed potatoes.
Couldn't ask for a better Southern lunch.
The ham was great -
but their cornbread hot off the grill, that was special.
More pancake than traditional corn bread, it is the way
most places do corn bread in Tennessee. There was
a little bit of crunch from the corn meal. Really good.
The moral - keep
driving. There's always going to be a Breeding's
somewhere down the road, as long as the road isn't an
interstate.
